A Community Blend: Indaba and Traci BemisUnite for Cougs4Kids

Coffee, Collaboration, and Commitment

We’re dedicated to empowering marginalized youth to overcome challenges and build a brighter future at Believe in Me. Our Cougs4Kids program pairs Washington State University (WSU) student-athletes with young leaders for mentorship, leadership training, and community projects. This initiative thrives thanks to partnerships with local businesses like Indaba Coffee and its inspiring owner, Bobby Enslow.

Indaba Coffee’s recent First Friday event was a powerful testament to community collaboration. By donating 10% of all sales to Cougs4Kids, Indaba helped raise critical funds for the program.

Bobby Enslow’s Journey of Community Impact

From Spokane to South Africa: Finding a Purpose

Bobby Enslow’s story begins in Spokane, where he grew up, attended North Central High School, and earned both a finance degree and an MBA from WSU. But his perspective shifted during a summer trip to South Africa. Struck by the country’s stark economic disparities and the invisibility of marginalized populations, Bobby returned home determined to make a difference in Spokane’s underserved neighborhoods.

Returning Home: Embracing West Central Spokane

Back in Spokane, Bobby turned his focus to overlooked neighborhoods like West Central—a community with a rich history but significant challenges. In 2008, he moved there and began developing a business plan to create a welcoming space for all. The result was Indaba Coffee, a café that prioritizes inclusivity, connection, and exceptional coffee.

“Indaba Cares was inspired by a past employee Sarah Wellenbrock. We wanted to do something to piggyback off of Spokane's First Friday Downtown events and raise money for local non-profits at the same time. I chose Cougs4Kids and Believe in Me because of our passion to help people in the margins. Cougs4Kids specifically working with marginalized youth strikes a chord with our passion to help raise up the next generation of compassionate leaders.”

Indaba Coffee: A Hub for Connection and Growth

Building a Gathering Space with Purpose

Indaba Coffee opened in 2009 with a modest budget and a big dream: to be a space where everyone feels welcome. Over the years, it has grown into a beloved Spokane institution with multiple locations and a roasting operation. Customers come from near and far—not just for the coffee but for the sense of community that Bobby envisioned.

A Catalyst for Community Transformation

More than just a coffee shop, Indaba has become a hub for positive change. Bobby believes that coffee is inherently relational, providing opportunities for people to connect, support one another, and grow together. Indaba’s success proves that businesses can be a powerful force for good in their communities.

“I believe home buying and selling can create dynamic impact for social change. This is why I donate 10% of my compensation, from every home sale to community benefit organizations. I worked in the nonprofit sector for much of my career and realize the immense value that community organizations bring to our city. Anything I can do to help, I want to. Bonus is that my husband and several family members are Cougs and the Cougs for Kids program reflects hope, inspires young people and connects them to opportunities, which I'm really excited to support.”

Supporting Youth Empowerment: Indaba’s Partnership with Cougs4Kids

A Shared Commitment to Uplifting Youth

Cougs4Kids is one of Believe in Me’s flagship programs. It is designed to empower marginalized youth through mentorship with WSU student-athletes. Indaba Coffee’s decision to donate 10% of all sales on First Friday directly supported this mission, helping us provide resources and guidance to underserved youth across Washington State.

A Day of Collaboration and Community

The day was made even more exciting by the attendance of WSU student-athletes Eva Lowder, Gavin Dimick, Madisyn Negro, Angela Turner, and Italia Bradford, who engaged with customers and shared their journeys as athletes and mentors. Their energy and enthusiasm brought the Cougs4Kids mission to life, inspiring attendees to rally behind the cause.

The event successfully met its $1,000 fundraising goal thanks to the incredible community response. Local realtor Traci Bemis, founder of Homes for Change, generously matched the amount, doubling the impact. Traci’s commitment to making a difference in the Spokane community exemplifies her passion for supporting meaningful causes. As an eXp Realty agent, Traci helps homebuyers and sellers with professional, attentive, and responsive service—qualities she extends to her philanthropic efforts. A warm shoutout to Traci for her generosity and for partnering with us on this impactful day!
